What's the definition of 'thorny'? A 'thailor at thea'! HA HA! OK, now that I've got my favorite horny sailor
joke out of the way, let's get to my favorite horny sailor movie. I remember catching "Weekend Pass" on
cable when I was about 13 (actually, I also remember it playing in theaters a year or two before and
being not allowed to see it because it was rated R!) and really enjoying it. It was funny, had a likeable
cast, and a nice healthy bunch of t&a - so important when you're that age (anywhere between 13 and
104).
Anyway, through the years I've never EVER read a good review for this movie and have never run
across another person who liked it (I was kind of hard-pressed to find anyone who even remembered
it), so I assumed it was one of those things that I liked as a kid but if I ever saw it as an adult would be
either bored to tears or cringe because I ever told people I liked it. But having just caught it on DVD as
part of the 'School Dazed' collection, I must say I was pleasantly surprised in how much I enjoyed the
movie.
We start off with these four horny sailors built out of common stereotypes - there's the aspiring comic,
the slick womanizer, the nerd, and the good-natured black guy from the wrong side of the tracks.
They're all in town looking to get laid and they've all made separate plans - the comic is going to do an
open mic night, the womanizer is going to look up his college crush, the nerd has a blind date with a
general's daughter, and the black guy is going to look up his old girlfriend.
As you might have guessed, nothing goes according to plan for the three guys and some disastrous
scenarios ensue. But out of the ashes, they all manage to find love and realize they were better off than
they could have even planned.
Not quite sure why this movie has such a bad reputation. While it's part of a rather disreputable genre, I
would say it's one of the best of it's type. The acting is actually pretty good throughout and the
characters are extremely likeable if a bit cliched. But the movie has a very appealing nature - even the
jokes we can see coming a mile away manage to provoke a smile.
I won't go as far as to call the movie 'heart-warming,' but I will say the ending is surprisingly poignant. It
would strike a chord with anyone who's ever gone off to school or the military or wherever and have to
leave your buddies and girlfriends behind. Or maybe I'm just becoming a wuss in my old age.
What's even sadder is that very few of the fresh-faced cast went on to much else. There really seem to
be a lot of potential stars in the batch, but alas, very few of these people seem to have gone on to much
else. Except, of course, for the late great comic genius Phil Hartman who has a small role as the comedy
club emcee. Hartman was a great comedian who is sorely missed. Discovering his little-known bit in the
movie was like the icing on the cake. A truly nice surprise capping off a great midnight movie.
